Protecting Participation in Civic Life Workbook
Resources for accompanying voters, contesting misinformation & providing faithful witness to ensure safe and meaningful elections for all
For the Catholic Church, participation in civic life is not merely a political act but a matter of human dignity and the common good. The importance of election participation has deep roots in Catholic social thought, from St. Thomas Aquinas to modern magisterial teachings. Pope St. John Paul II cautioned, "is possible only in a State ruled by law," and Pope Francis has warned that noble words like "democracy," "freedom," and "justice" can be emptied of meaning and turned into instruments of domination. To protect participation, then, is to protect the conditions—truthful information, free and fair elections, and equal access for all—under which participation becomes real rather than hollow.
